The number in an advertisement is not always the amount a buyer must pay. Mandatory service charges, processing fees, delivery, activation, and required add-ons can materially change a deal at checkout.

Ask for the all-in price

Request a written total that includes every mandatory charge before providing payment details. If the purchase involves financing, separate the product price from interest and credit-related fees.

Distinguish optional from required

Extended warranties, insurance, expedited service, and memberships may be preselected or presented as standard. Ask whether each item can be removed without changing the core purchase.

  • Review taxes and delivery separately.
  • Look for recurring charges after a trial period.
  • Check cancellation and restocking fees.
  • Save the advertisement and final itemized price.

Slow down at the final screen

Price changes often appear immediately before confirmation. Read the order summary, renewal language, and payment schedule. If the total differs from the advertised offer, ask for an explanation or pause the purchase until the terms are clear.
